The final push - 03 September 2010

Willem helming with Pete looking onJanet calling trim on Hull & Humber

The Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Yacht Race is drawing to a close for the two Clipper entries as they head toward the Solent and the finish line.

“Tack, eat, tack, sleep. Tack, eat, tack, sleep...” Hull & Humber skipper Piers Dudin explains the current activities on board the 68 foot racing yacht.

“It’s been uphill for a few days now and it looks set to continue all the way to the finish,” reports Piers, as his team pass Salcombe on the English south coast.

The Yorkshire entry’s crew currently find themselves in fiftieth place but this morning have found good boat speeds and are ploughing along at eights knots, “Despite what looks like a slightly disappointing result, Hull & Humber has once again performed excellently, storming through many sections of the race while looking after her crew as she went..

“The crew in turn have done a great job, learning the skills required to drive her at speed, safely, and doing a good job at looking after each other at the same time,” continues Piers who expects to cross the finish line at 10am Saturday.

“This crew won't sail together as a complete unit again but they've formed impressive watches and worked off most of the calories they've been fed with hauling sails around the deck and up the forestays,” explains Piers who, as skipper, helped train and mould together a crew of non-professional sailors who sailed Hull & Humber round the world in the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race.

On board Edinburgh Inspiring Capital crew member Calum Macaskill reports, “The crew are beginning to think of home, friends, partners and beer. However it is beautiful weather and good wind so we must concentrate on the immediate and knuckle down.

“The South Easterlies are with us with a vengeance. We now face a long hard beat to windward which gives us the opportunity to work hard, use the right sails and pull up a couple of places in the final haul,” he says.

Like Hull & Humber, Edinburgh Inspiring Capital also expects a Saturday arrival.

Fickle winds slows progress
01 September 2010

As the sun rose on day nine, the fickle winds had caught up with Hull & Humber and skipper Piers Dudin admitted that the reality of meeting their ten day target in the Round Britain and Ireland Race will not be possible unless “the earth spins the other way!”
