Durban 2010 saves the day for New York and Hull & Humber

22 July 2007

Tacks and gybes are becoming slicker as the crew gets used to working together. We spent a couple of hours practising the drills necessary for transfering water carriers and doctors between boats. Tony, the medic on New York, came across in a dinghy bearing gifts and returned with presents for his crew.  Unfortunately (or fortunately, since we now knew what to do) we soon had to do a transfer for real, sending anti-biotics to Hull & Humber.

‘Bob’, the conventional fender-and-warp man overboard has been replaced by Dolly, the world’s most expensive inflatable dolphin, and we did a few MOB drills with Hull & Humber

The crew is getting used to the three watch system – on-deck, standby/mother or sleeping. We’ve baked bread, cooked chocolate brownies and tried out lots of the foods that we’ll be eating on the race – dried mince is definitely better than dried chicken but its all ok with Tabasco!

Skipper Ricky has now stood down for 24 hours. The crew considered diverting into the nearest port to find a bar, but decided that the evening sunshine out at sea would be good practice for the Indian Ocean at Durban.

Durban 2010 is now racing towards the Dover Straits with Clipper 6 in hot pursuit.
